When is an assessment useful?

First, assess the extent of the accident damage.

Not every minor incident automatically requires a comprehensive assessment report. The extent and type of damage and the specific insurance settlement determine what is appropriate.

Third-party liability claim

An accident you did not cause

If you did not cause the accident, a necessary expert report may form the basis for settling the third-party liability claim. For minor damage, a repair estimate with photos may be sufficient.

Whether the report and its costs are necessary and reimbursable depends on the individual case and any shared liability.
Comprehensive insurance claim

Damage to your own vehicle

For comprehensive or partial-coverage insurance claims, the process, choice of assessor and settlement depend on your own insurance policy and its terms.

Before ordering an assessment, check your insurer's requirements for the particular claim.

Documents

What you can prepare for the inspection.

You do not need to have everything ready when you first contact us. The more information you already have, the easier it is to prepare your case.

Especially helpful are:

  • Vehicle registration certificate (Part I)
  • Date and place of the accident
  • Other party's registration number, if known
  • Insurer and claim/reference number, if available
  • Any existing accident or damage photos
  • Police reference number, if the police attended

Missing details are no reason to delay contacting us.

Our damage report form deliberately asks only for essential information. Additional information about the other party or insurer can be added if already known.

You can also send the registration document and damage photos by WhatsApp or email.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about accident assessment reports.

Which documents and photos help with the initial report?
Photos of the damaged vehicle and affected areas, along with a photo of the vehicle registration certificate, are useful. Add details of when and where the accident happened and the other party, if known.
Do I need an assessment after every accident?
No. For minor damage, a repair estimate with photos may be enough. For more significant damage or a possible total loss, an expert assessment may be useful or necessary.
Assessment report or repair estimate – which is appropriate?
A repair estimate with photos may suffice for small, clearly visible damage. An accident assessment can also document, for example, possible diminished value, the replacement value and other details relevant to settlement. Whether a report is required and who pays depends on the case.
Can I choose my own assessor after an accident I did not cause?
For third-party liability claims where you are not at fault, you can generally choose a suitably qualified assessor yourself. A suggestion made by the other party's insurer is not automatically binding. For CASCO claims, your own insurance terms apply.
Who pays for the accident assessment?
If you were not at fault, the other party's motor liability insurer generally covers the cost of a necessary expert report. Shared liability, minor damage or other circumstances can change who pays.
Can the vehicle be inspected at its location?
Yes. An on-site inspection can be arranged. If further technical checks make sense, we recommend our Nordheim premises where possible.
How quickly can I get an appointment?
We arrange appointments individually. We cannot guarantee a fixed waiting time because availability, vehicle location and the extent of damage vary.
